Long Layover in Nairobi? Here Is How to Spend It Well

Six hours at JKIA does not have to mean six hours in a departure lounge. A game drive is closer than you think.

Nairobi is one of the very few cities in the world where a layover can include a safari, and with a little planning you can be back at the terminal with hours to spare.

How much time do you actually need?

You need a minimum of six hours between landing and your next departure to leave the airport comfortably. Below that, use the lounge.

Breakdown: forty five minutes to clear immigration and exit, thirty to sixty minutes driving each way, and at least three hours at your destination. The extra is your buffer, and you never travel without one.

Option 1 - Nairobi National Park game drive

The park gate is roughly twenty five minutes from the terminal. Three hours inside gets you rhino, lion, buffalo, giraffe and zebra with the city skyline on the horizon. It is the single best use of a long layover anywhere in Africa.

Option 2 - Elephant orphanage and Giraffe Centre

The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust orphanage opens to visitors for one hour each day, at eleven in the morning. The Giraffe Centre next door lets you hand feed endangered Rothschild giraffe from a raised platform. Both are close to the park and combine naturally with a drive.

Option 3 - Carnivore or Talisman for lunch

If your layover is in the middle of the day and you would rather eat well than travel far, a proper lunch in Karen or Langata, then a slow drive back, is a genuinely pleasant afternoon.

Option 4 - The city centre and a market

For shopping, the Maasai Market, the Kazuri bead workshop and the Kenya National Museum all sit within forty minutes of the airport.

The logistics that matter

  • Store your luggage. Most airports and our vehicles can hold it securely while you are out.
  • Keep your onward boarding pass and passport on you.
  • Book an airport shuttle in advance so your driver waits for you rather than the other way round.
  • Set an alarm ninety minutes before your onward flight and tell your driver to enforce it.

Tell us your flight numbers and layover window and we will build a programme that fits inside it with time to spare.
