The Best Time to Visit the Maasai Mara (Month by Month)

The Great Migration is spectacular, but it is not the only reason to visit the Mara. Here is what each season actually delivers.

The Maasai Mara is a year round destination, and the best time to go depends entirely on what you want to see.

July to October - the Great Migration

Roughly one and a half million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebra cross from the Serengeti into the Mara in search of grass. River crossings at the Mara and Talek rivers are the dramatic highlight, though no one can guarantee a crossing on any given day.

Rates peak, camps book out six to twelve months ahead, and the plains are full of vehicles around the busiest crossings.

November to December - short rains

The plains turn green almost overnight and the resident wildlife spreads out. Rates drop sharply, the light is beautiful and you often have sightings almost to yourself. This is the best value window for photographers.

January to March - hot and dry

Excellent game viewing as animals concentrate around remaining water. Calving season on the short grass plains brings predator activity, and the Mara is ideal combined with Amboseli at this time.

April to June - long rains

Heavy afternoon showers and the lowest rates of the year. Roads become challenging, some camps close, but the reserve is empty and lush. If you are on a budget and flexible, this is your window.

How many days do you need?

Three days and two nights is the minimum that justifies the drive. Four to five days lets you go deeper into the conservancies where off-road driving and night game drives are permitted, which many travellers find more rewarding than the main reserve.

We build Mara itineraries year round. Tell us your dates and we will tell you honestly what to expect in that window.
